Ellipsis and substitution

Ellipsis və substitution (buraxılış və əvəzetmə)

After this lesson you can

  • Can omit repeated words (ellipsis) in coordinated clauses, infinitives and comparatives to avoid redundancy.
  • Can use substitution words (one, ones, do, so, not, there, then) to replace repeated phrases.
  • Can combine ellipsis and substitution to produce natural, cohesive advanced speech and writing.

Explanation

Ellipsis means leaving out words that are repeated or understood from context, especially in coordinated clauses, infinitives and comparisons: She ordered tea and I (ordered) coffee. I didn't want to go, but I had to.

Substitution replaces a repeated word or phrase with a substitute word: one/ones (I lost my pen. Can you lend me one?), do/does/did (She sings better than she did before), so/not (I think so. I hope not.), there/then.

These devices make speech and writing more natural and cohesive. However, some elements cannot be omitted: I like it very much (not I like very much).

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

Ellipsis nədir?

Ellipsis cümlədə təkrar olunan söz və ya ifadələrin buraxılmasıdır. Məna kontekstdən aydın olduqda işlədilir.

  • Koordinasiyada buraxılış: She ordered tea and I (ordered) coffee.
  • Köməkçi feilin buraxılışı: He can swim and so can she. (burada can təkrarlanmır, amma so ilə inversiya olunur)
  • İnfinitive-də buraxılış: I didn't want to go, but I had to. (to go buraxılıb)
  • Müqayisədə buraxılış: The weather is colder than (it was) last year.

Substitution nədir?

Substitution təkrar sözün əvəzlik və ya başqa sözlə əvəz edilməsidir.

  • one / ones: I lost my pen. Can you lend me one? (a pen əvəzinə)
  • do / does / did: She sings better than she did before. (sang əvəzinə)
  • so / not: I think so. I hope not.
  • there / then: There is a problem. I told you so.

Ən çox rast gəlinən səhvlər

Azərbaycan dili ellipsisə çox meyllidir, lakin ingilis dilində bəzi yerlərdə buraxılış mümkün deyil.

  • I like very much. → I like it very much. (obyekt buraxıla bilməz)
  • She is taller than me. düzgündür, amma rəsmi üslubda She is taller than I am. daha yaxşıdır.
  • I asked him to help and he did. (did = helped) düzgündür, amma he helped də demək olar.

Nə vaxt istifadə etməli?

Ellipsis və substitution nitqi daha təbii edir, xüsusilə danışıqda və yazıda təkrarı azaldır. Lakin rəsmi sənədlərdə həddindən artıq ellipsis qeyri-müəyyənliyə səbəb ola bilər.

Examples

  • She ordered tea and I ordered coffee.

O çay sifariş etdi, mən isə qəhvə sifariş etdim.

    ellipsis: ikinci 'ordered' buraxıla bilər

  • I didn't want to go, but I had to.

    Getmək istəmirdim, amma getməli oldum.

    infinitive-də ellipsis

  • I lost my pen. Can you lend me one?

Qələmimi itirdim. Mənə birini verə bilərsən?

    one = a pen

  • She sings better than she did before.

    O, əvvəlkindən daha yaxşı oxuyur.

    did = sang

  • I think so, but I'm not sure.

    Məncə belədir, amma əmin deyiləm.

so = that it is true

  • The weather is colder than last year.

    Hava keçən ildən soyuqdur.

    müqayisədə ellipsis

  • He can swim and so can she.

O üzə bilir, onun bacısı da.

    so + inversiya

Common mistakes

  • I like very much.

    I like it very much.

İngilis dilində 'like' felindən sonra obyekt (it) buraxıla bilməz.

  • She is taller than me is.

She is taller than I am.

Müqayisədə 'than'dan sonra köməkçi feil (am) gəlir, amma 'me is' yanlışdır.

  • I asked him to help and he helped.

I asked him to help and he did.

Təkrarı azaltmaq üçün 'did' işlədilir, amma 'he helped' də düzgündür. Səhv olan 'he did helped'dir.

  • I think not so.

    I don't think so.

İnkar üçün 'I don't think so' və ya 'I think not' işlədilir, amma 'I think not so' yanlışdır.
