Writing: a persuasive editorial

Yazı: inandırıcı redaksiya məqaləsi (editorial)

After this lesson you can

  • Can structure a persuasive editorial with a compelling hook, a clear thesis, well-ordered arguments, a counterargument, and a resonant conclusion.
  • Can deploy rhetorical devices (tricolon, antithesis, rhetorical questions, concession) appropriately for a public audience.
  • Can control register and tone to be authoritative yet accessible, using modality and reporting verbs to calibrate stance.

Explanation

What is an editorial?

An editorial expresses a publication's stance and aims to persuade readers. It combines logical argument with rhetorical flair: vivid examples, rhetorical questions, and a clear call to action.

Structure

  1. Headline: short, attention-grabbing, stance-revealing.
  2. Hook + thesis: engage the reader, then state your main claim.
  3. Arguments: one claim per paragraph, supported by evidence.
  4. Counterargument: acknowledge the opposing view and rebut it.
  5. Conclusion: reinforce your position and call for action.

Rhetorical devices

  • Tricolon: It is costly, it is unfair, and it is unnecessary.
  • Antithesis: Not because it is easy, but because it is hard.
  • Rhetorical question: Can we really afford to wait?
  • Concession: Admittedly, the plan has flaws, yet none is insurmountable.

Tone and modality

Use must for strong obligation, should for recommendation, could for possibility. Reporting verbs carry stance: claim suggests doubt, acknowledge shows acceptance, insist conveys urgency.

Common pitfalls

Overuse of rhetorical questions, unsupported claims, ignoring counterarguments, and mixing formal and informal registers.

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

Redaksiya məqaləsi nədir?

Redaksiya məqaləsi (editorial) qəzet və ya jurnalın rəsmi mövqeyini bildirən, oxucunu inandırmağa yönəlmiş yazıdır. Akademik məqalədən fərqli olaraq, burada emosional təsir, ritorik suallar və qısa, kəskin cümlələr də yer alır. Lakin bu, məntiqsizlik demək deyil: hər iddia sübutla dəstəklənməlidir.

Quruluş

  1. Başlıq (headline) qısa, diqqətçəkən və mövqeyi əks etdirən olmalıdır.
  2. Giriş (hook + thesis): oxucunu tutan fakt, sual və ya kiçik hekayə, ardınca əsas tezis.
  3. Arqumentlər: hər bənddə bir iddia, sübut və izah.
  4. Əks arqument (counterargument): qarşı tərəfin fikrini qəbul edib təkzib etmək inandırıcılığı artırır.
  5. Nəticə: çağırış (call to action) və ya güclü yekun fikir.

Ritorik vasitələr

  • Tricolon (üçlük): It is costly, it is unfair, and it is unnecessary.
  • Antithesis (əkslik): Not because it is easy, but because it is hard.
  • Ritorik sual: Can we really afford to wait?
  • Concession (güzəşt): Admittedly, the plan has flaws, yet none is insurmountable.
  • Rule of three və təkrar: We need action, we need urgency, we need leadership.

Ton və modallıq

Redaksiya məqaləsində modallıq diqqətlə seçilir. must qətiyyət, should tövsiyə, could ehtimal bildirir. Məsələn: The government must act now. (qəti) / The government should consider... (daha yumşaq). Reporting verbs də mövqe çaları verir: claim şübhə, acknowledge qəbul, insist təkid bildirir.

Azərbaycan dilində qarşılığı

Azərbaycan dilində də redaksiya məqalələri oxşar quruluşa malikdir: giriş, əsas fikir, sübutlar, nəticə. Lakin ingilis dilində thesis statement adətən birinci abzasın sonunda yerləşir və çox vaxt bir cümlə ilə ifadə olunur.

Tipik səhvlər

  • Həddindən artıq emosiya, sübutsuz iddialar.
  • Əks arqumentin tamamilə unudulması.
  • Ritorik sualların ard-arda yığılması (oxucunu yorur).
  • Register qarışıqlığı: rəsmi məqalədə jarqon ifadələr.

Examples

  • It is not merely a question of money; it is a question of principle.

Bu sadəcə pul məsələsi deyil; bu, prinsip məsələsidir.

    Antithesis vasitəsilə fikri gücləndirmək.

  • Admittedly, the proposal has flaws, yet none of them is insurmountable.

Etiraf edək ki, təklifin qüsurları var, lakin onların heç biri aradan qaldırıla bilməyəcək qədər ciddi deyil.

    Concession + rebuttal.

  • The government must act now, before it is too late.

Hökumət indi hərəkət etməlidir, çox gec olmadan.

    must + təcili çağırış.

  • Critics claim the policy is too expensive, but they overlook the long-term savings.

Tənqidçilər siyasətin çox baha olduğunu iddia edirlər, lakin uzunmüddətli qənaəti nəzərdən qaçırırlar.

    claim + but ilə təkzib.

  • Can we really afford to ignore the evidence any longer?

Doğrudanmı biz sübutları daha çox görməzdən gələ bilərik?

    Ritorik sual.

  • We need action, we need urgency, and we need leadership.

Bizə hərəkət lazımdır, bizə təcili tədbirlər lazımdır, bizə liderlik lazımdır.

    Tricolon.

  • The report acknowledges the risks but insists that the benefits outweigh them.

Hesabat riskləri qəbul edir, lakin faydaların onlardan üstün olduğunu təkid edir.

    acknowledges + insists.

Common mistakes

  • The government should to act immediately.

    The government should act immediately.

Modal feildən sonra 'to' işlədilmir: should + bare infinitive.

  • In my opinion, I think the policy is wrong.

In my opinion, the policy is wrong.

'In my opinion' və 'I think' eyni mənadadır, ikisini birlikdə işlətmək artıqlıqdır.

  • The article says that the plan is bad, but I think it is good.

The article claims that the plan is flawed, yet I would argue it has merit.

Redaksiya məqaləsində 'says' və 'bad/good' kimi sadə ifadələr əvəzinə daha dəqiq reporting verbs və sinonimlər seçilməlidir.

  • Although the plan has flaws, but it is still worth trying.

Although the plan has flaws, it is still worth trying.

İngilis dilində 'although' və 'but' eyni cümlədə işlədilmir.

  • We must to consider the consequences.

    We must consider the consequences.

must + bare infinitive, 'to' yoxdur.
