Present Simple vs Present Continuous

Present Simple və Present Continuous fərqi

After this lesson you can

  • Can choose between Present Simple and Present Continuous to talk about routines versus actions now.
  • Can recognise common stative verbs (like, know, want, need) and avoid using them in the continuous form.
  • Can use time expressions as clues to choose the correct tense.

Explanation

Main difference

  • Present Simple: habits, routines, permanent situations, He plays football on Sundays. I live in Baku.
  • Present Continuous: actions now and temporary situations, He's playing football now. I'm living with my aunt this month.

Time words help: every day, usually, never → simple; now, at the moment, this week, Look! → continuous.

Stative verbs

Verbs for feelings, thoughts and possession are not usually used with -ing: like, love, want, need, know, understand, believe, remember, have (own), see, hear. Say I know the answer, not I'm knowing.

Some verbs change meaning: I have a car (own) / I'm having lunch (eating); I think it's good (opinion) / I'm thinking about it (process).

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

Əsas fərq

Azərbaycan dilində "O, futbol oynayır" cümləsi həm "hər həftə oynayır", həm də "indi oynayır" mənasını verə bilər. İngilis dilində bu iki məna iki fərqli zamanla ifadə olunur:

Present SimplePresent Continuous
vərdiş, müntəzəm hərəkətindi baş verən hərəkət
daimi vəziyyətmüvəqqəti vəziyyət
He plays football on Sundays. He's playing football now.
I live in Baku.I'm living with my aunt this month.

Zaman ifadələri ipucudur

  • Present Simple: every day, usually, always, often, never, on Mondays, once a week
  • Present Continuous: now, right now, at the moment, today, this week, Look!, Listen!

Vəziyyət feilləri (stative verbs)

Bəzi feillər hərəkəti yox, vəziyyəti, hissi, fikri bildirir. Onlar adətən -ing formada işlənmir, hətta "indi" mənasında belə:

  • hiss: like, love, hate, want, need, prefer
  • fikir: know, understand, believe, remember, think (= fikirləşmək mənasında "rəy")
  • sahiblik: have (= sahib olmaq), own, belong
  • hiss orqanları: see, hear, smell, taste

I know the answer. (✗ I'm knowing), Do you understand me now? (✗ Are you understanding)

Diqqət: have və think

  • I have a car (sahiblik, -ing yox), amma I'm having lunch (yemək yemək, hərəkət).
  • I think it's a good idea (rəy), amma I'm thinking about my exam (fikirləşmək prosesi).

Tipik səhv

Azərbaycanlı şagirdlər "Mən başa düşürəm" cümləsini çox vaxt I am understanding kimi tərcümə edirlər. Doğrusu: I understand.

  • What are you thinking about?

    Nə barədə fikirləşirsən?
