Gerunds and infinitives: basics
Gerund və məsdər: əsaslar
After this lesson you can
- Can use common verbs followed by -ing (enjoy, finish, mind) and by to + infinitive (want, decide, hope).
- Can use the -ing form after prepositions and as the subject of a sentence.
- Can use like/love/hate with both forms in everyday sentences.
Explanation
Verb + -ing or verb + to
When one verb follows another, the second verb is either -ing or to + verb. The first verb decides.
- + -ing: enjoy, finish, mind, stop, avoid, practise, keep, I enjoy cooking.
- + to: want, need, decide, hope, plan, learn, agree, would like, I want to travel.
- Both: like, love, hate, start, I love dancing / to dance.
After a preposition, always use -ing: I'm good at singing. Thanks for helping.
Use -ing as a subject: Running is fun.
To express purpose, use to, not for: I came here to study.
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
İki forma
İngilis dilində bir feildən sonra ikinci feil gəlirsə, o, iki formadan birində olur:
- -ing forması (gerund): I enjoy reading.
- to + feil (infinitive): I want to read.
Azərbaycan dilində bu, -maq/-mək məsdəri və ya -mağı/-məyi formasına uyğundur: oxumağı sevirəm, oxumaq istəyirəm. İngilis dilində isə hansı formanın gələcəyini birinci feil müəyyən edir, ona görə bu feilləri qruplarla əzbərləmək lazımdır.
-ing ilə işlənən feillər
enjoy, finish, mind, stop, avoid, practise, keep, suggest, can't stand
- She finished cooking at seven.
- Do you mind opening the window?
to + feil ilə işlənən feillər

- Amma would like həmişə to ilə: I'd like to swim.
Ön sözdən sonra həmişə -ing
Ön söz (**in, at, of, about, before, after, without **) feildən əvvəl gəlirsə, feil -ing alır:
- I'm interested in learning Spanish.
- She's good at drawing.
- Think before speaking.
Subyekt kimi -ing
Cümlənin əvvəlində iş/hərəkət subyekt olarsa, -ing işlənir: Swimming is good for your health. (Azərbaycanca: Üzmək sağlamlıq üçün faydalıdır.)
Məqsəd üçün to
«...mək üçün» mənasında to işlənir, for yox: I went to the shop to buy bread. (✗ for buy, ✗ for buying)
