Giving advice: should, ought to

Məsləhət vermək: should, ought to

After this lesson you can

  • Can give and ask for advice using should, shouldn't and ought to.
  • Can use other advice phrases such as Why don't you...? and If I were you, I'd...
  • Can respond politely to advice.

Explanation

Giving advice

Use should / shouldn't + verb (no to) to give advice: You should see a dentist. You shouldn't eat so much sugar.

Ask for advice: What should I do? Should I tell him?

ought to means the same but is more formal: You ought to rest.

should is advice; must / have to is a rule or strong obligation. Do not use must for friendly advice, it can sound too strong.

Other phrases: Why don't you...? If I were you, I'd... Maybe you could...

Soften advice with I think you should... or I don't think you should...

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

should

should = «...malısan, yaxşı olar ki...». Bu, məsləhətdir, məcburiyyət deyil.

  • You should drink more water. – Daha çox su içməlisən.
  • You shouldn't stay up so late. – Bu qədər gec yatmamalısan.

Quruluş

  • should + V1 (to yoxdur!): ✓ You should go. ✗ You should to go.
  • Bütün şəxslərdə eyni forma: He should see a doctor. (✗ He shoulds)
  • İnkar: shouldn't = should not
  • Sual: Should I call her? – Ona zəng edim?
  • Məsləhət soruşmaq: What should I do?

ought to

ought to mənaca should-a çox yaxındır, amma daha rəsmi səslənir və danışıqda az işlənir. Burada to mütləqdir:

  • You ought to apologise.
  • İnkar forması (ought not to) çox rəsmidir; danışıqda shouldn't deyin.

should və must fərqi

shouldmust / have to
məsləhət, fikirqayda, məcburiyyət
You should wear a coat. You must wear a seatbelt.

Azərbaycan dilində -malı/-məli şəkilçisi hər iki mənanı verir: getməlisən. Ona görə tələbələr bəzən must-u məsləhət üçün işlədirlər və bu, sərt səslənir. Dostunuza məsləhət verəndə should seçin.

Başqa məsləhət ifadələri

  • Why don't you take a break? – Niyə bir az dincəlmirsən?
  • If I were you, I'd talk to the teacher. – Mən sənin yerində olsam, müəllimlə danışardım.
  • Maybe you could try a different shop.

Cavab vermək

That's a good idea. / Thanks, I'll try that. / I'm not sure, but thanks.

I think you should

Yumşaq məsləhət üçün: I think you should.... İnkarda isə I don't think you should... deyilir (✗ I think you shouldn't – səhv deyil, amma az təbiidir).

Examples

  • You look tired. You should go to bed early tonight.

Yorğun görünürsən. Bu gecə tez yatmalısan.
