used to for past habits

Keçmiş vərdişlər üçün used to

After this lesson you can

  • Can talk about past habits and states that are no longer true using used to.
  • Can form negatives and questions with didn't use to and Did you use to...?
  • Can compare life in the past and now.

Explanation

used to

Use used to + verb for past habits and states that are not true now.

  • I used to play the violin. (I don't now.)
  • There used to be a park here.

Negative: didn't use to, I didn't use to like coffee. Question: Did you use to...?, Did you use to live in Quba? After did, write use, not used.

Do not use used to for a single past event (I went to Rome in 2019) or for present habits (I usually get up at 7).

It is very useful for comparing then and now: I used to be shy, but now I'm confident.

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

Məna

used to + V1 keçmişdə müntəzəm olan, amma indi olmayan vərdiş və vəziyyətləri bildirir:

  • I used to play football every day. – Əvvəllər hər gün futbol oynayırdım (indi oynamıram).
  • We used to live in Lənkəran. – Əvvəllər Lənkəranda yaşayırdıq.

Azərbaycan dilində bunu -ardı/-ərdi və ya -ırdı formaları ilə, çox vaxt «əvvəllər» sözü ilə deyirik: *Uşaqlıqda çox şirniyyat **yeyərdim ***. İngilis dilində bu məna üçün used to çox təbiidir.

Quruluş

FormaNümunə
TəsdiqI/She/They used to + V1 → She used to smoke.
İnkardidn't use to + V1 → I didn't use to like olives.
SualDid you use to + V1? → Did you use to walk to school?

Diqqət: inkar və sualda did olduğu üçün -d düşür: didn't use to (✗ didn't used to). Bu, Past Simple-dəki qaydanın eynisidir: did + V1.

Tələffüz: used to /ˈjuːstə/ kimi oxunur, d səsi demək olar ki, eşidilmir.

Vərdiş və vəziyyət

  • Vərdiş: He used to go fishing on Sundays.
  • Vəziyyət: There used to be a cinema here. – Burada əvvəllər kinoteatr var idi.

used to yoxsa Past Simple?

  • Bir dəfə olan hadisə üçün used to işlənmir: ✗ I used to go to Paris in 2019. ✓ I went to Paris in 2019.
  • Müntəzəm keçmiş vərdişlər üçün hər ikisi mümkündür, amma used to «indi belə deyil» mənasını vurğulayır.

İndiki vərdiş üçün yox

used to yalnız keçmişdir. İndiki vərdiş üçün usually + Present Simple işlədin: ✗ I use to drink tea. ✓ I usually drink tea.

Müqayisə

I used to have long hair, but now it's short. – Keçmiş və indi müqayisəsi üçün çox faydalı quruluşdur.
