Reported questions and commands

Vasitəli suallar və əmrlər

After this lesson you can

  • Can report yes/no and wh- questions with correct word order and tense changes.
  • Can report commands and requests with tell/ask + object + to-infinitive.
  • Can use common reporting verbs such as advise, remind, warn and offer.

Explanation

Reported questions

Use statement word order and move the tense back. No do/does/did and no question mark.

  • 'Where do you live?' → She asked me where I lived.
  • Yes/no questions use if or whether: He asked if I was tired.

Commands and requests

tell/ask + person + (not) to + verb

  • 'Close the door.' → He told me to close the door.
  • 'Please don't shout.' → She asked us not to shout.

Other verbs: **advise, remind, warn + person + to **; offer, refuse + to. Don't say said me to, use told me to.

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

Vasitəli suallar

Birbaşa sualı başqasına ötürəndə iki şey dəyişir: zaman bir pillə geri çəkilir və söz sırası adi təsdiq cümləsi kimi olur.

Wh- suallar (what, where, why, how...):

  • 'Where **do you live **?' → She asked me where I lived.
  • 'What **are you doing **?' → He asked what I was doing.

**Yes/No suallar **, if və ya whether əlavə olunur:

  • 'Are you tired?' → She asked if I was tired.
  • 'Did you call him?' → He asked whether I had called him.

Vasitəli sualda do/does/did köməkçi felləri işlənmir və sonda sual işarəsi qoyulmur.

Azərbaycan dilində söz sırası sualda da, təsdiqdə də demək olar ki, eynidir (Harada yaşayırsan?, Harada yaşadığımı soruşdu), ona görə ingiliscədə inversiyanı saxlamaq çox yayılmış səhvdir: She asked where did I live.

Əmrlər və xahişlər

tell + şəxs + (not) to + V1, əmr

  • 'Close the door.' → He told me to close the door.
  • 'Don't be late.' → She told us not to be late.

ask + şəxs + (not) to + V1, xahiş

  • 'Could you help me?' → She asked me to help her.

Digər ötürmə felləri

remind+ şəxs + toShe reminded me to buy milk.
warn+ şəxs + not toHe warned us not to swim there.

say fellərindən sonra şəxs birbaşa gəlmir: He said me to wait → He told me to wait.
