Advanced modals: needn't have, should have, was able to
Mürəkkəb modal feillər: needn't have, should have, was able to
After this lesson you can
- Can distinguish needn't have done from didn't need to do
- Can express criticism and regret about the past with should have / ought to have / shouldn't have
- Can choose correctly between could and was able to / managed to for past ability
Explanation
needn't have done = you did it, but it was unnecessary: I needn't have cooked so much. didn't need to do = it wasn't necessary (usually you didn't do it): I didn't need to cook – we ate out.
should have / shouldn't have / ought to have done = criticism or regret about the past: You should have told me. I shouldn't have said that.
could = general past ability: I could swim at five. For success on one specific occasion, use was able to / managed to: Everyone was able to escape. In the negative, couldn't is fine for both. With see/hear we use could for single occasions.
could have done = possible but didn't happen: You could have been hurt!

1. needn't have done və didn't need to do
Bu ikisi Azərbaycan dilinə eyni cür tərcümə oluna bilər (lazım deyildi), amma mənaları fərqlidir:

- didn't need to + feil = lazım deyildi; adətən etməmisən, (bəzən etmisən, kontekst göstərir). I didn't need to cook, we went to a restaurant. (Bişirmədim, çünki ehtiyac yox idi.)
2. should have / ought to have / shouldn't have

4. could have done
Keçmişdə mümkün olan, amma baş verməyən: You could have been killed!, Ölə bilərdin! Və tənqid: You could have called!, Heç olmasa zəng edə bilərdin!
