Participle clauses
Feili sifət (participle) budaq cümlələri
After this lesson you can
- Can use -ing and -ed participle clauses to shorten relative and adverbial clauses
- Can use having + past participle to show that one action happened before another
- Can avoid dangling participles by keeping the same subject in both clauses
Explanation
Participle clauses make sentences shorter and more formal.
- -ing (active): Walking home, I saw a friend. The woman sitting by the window is my boss. Feeling ill, he stayed at home.
- -ed (passive): The bridge built in 1900 is still used. Shocked by the news, she cried.
- having + past participle (earlier action): Having finished the work, we left.
- Negative: Not knowing the answer, I kept quiet.
The subject of the participle clause must be the same as the subject of the main clause. Walking to work, it started to rain is wrong because the rain was not walking.
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
Azərbaycan dili ilə müqayisə
Bizim dildə feili bağlamalar çox işlənir: Evə gəlib yemək hazırladım, Kitabı oxuyaraq qeydlər etdi. İngilis dilində də oxşar funksiyanı participle clauses daşıyır. Ona görə bu mövzu azərbaycanlılar üçün məntiqcə asandır, əsas çətinlik formadadır.
1. Present participle (-ing), aktiv məna
- Eyni vaxtda baş verən hərəkət: Walking home, I saw an old friend. (Evə gedərkən ...)
- Səbəb: Feeling tired, she went to bed early. (Yorğun olduğu üçün ...)
- Nisbi cümlənin qısaldılması: The man standing at the door is my uncle. (= who is standing)
2. Past participle (-ed / 3-cü forma), passiv məna
- The house built in 1900 is now a museum. (= which was built)
- Shocked by the news, he couldn't speak. (= Because he was shocked)
- Written in simple English, the book is easy to read.
3. Having + past participle, əvvəlki hərəkət
Having finished the report, she went home., Hesabatı bitirdikdən sonra evə getdi. (Bizim -ıb şəkilçisinə yaxındır.) Passiv: Having been told the truth, he felt better.
4. Inkar
not participle-dan əvvəl gəlir: *** Not knowing** the way, we took a taxi.*
Ən vacib qayda: eyni mübtəda
Participle clause-un gizli mübtədası əsas cümlənin mübtədası ilə eyni olmalıdır.
- ✗ Walking to work, it started to rain. (Yağış işə getmirdi!)
- ✓ Walking to work, I got caught in the rain.
Üslub
Bu quruluşlar daha çox yazılı və rəsmi dildə işlənir: xəbərlərdə, esselərdə, hekayələrdə. Danışıqda adi when/because cümlələri daha təbiidir.
