Everyday English: humour, irony and understatement
Gündəlik ingilis dili: yumor, ironiya və mübaliğəsizlik
After this lesson you can
- Can recognise and interpret irony, sarcasm and understatement in everyday conversation.
- Can use understatement and ironic exaggeration appropriately to create humour without causing offence.
- Can distinguish between playful teasing and genuinely hurtful remarks in social contexts.
Explanation
Three pillars of humour
English humour often works indirectly through **irony **, sarcasm and understatement.
- Irony: saying the opposite of what you mean. Great, another flat tyre! actually means “How terrible!”
- Sarcasm: sharper, often critical irony. You're a real genius, aren't you? points out someone's mistake.
- Understatement: making something seem less important than it is. It's a bit chilly when it is -20°C.
Common understatement phrases
**a bit **, **not bad **, **I wouldn't say no **, **slightly **, could be worse.
When to use
With friends, in relaxed workplace chat, or about yourself. Avoid sarcasm with strangers or in formal situations. Tone of voice and facial expression are crucial.
Compared with Azerbaijani
Azerbaijani also uses irony, but understatement is far more frequent in English. That's a bit of a problem can mean a very big problem.
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
Yumorun üç sütunu
İngilis dilli mədəniyyətlərdə yumor çox vaxt birbaşa deyil, dolayı yolla çatdırılır. Əsas üç üsul:
- Ironiya (irony): deyilən sözün əsl mənasının əksi olması. Great, another flat tyre! (Əla, bir də təkər partladı!) Burada “great” əslində “dəhşət” deməkdir.
- Sarkazm (sarcasm): ironiyanın daha kəskin, çox vaxt tənqidi forması. You're a real genius, aren't you? (Sən lap dahisən, elə deyil?) Bu, adətən qarşıdakı şəxsin səhvini vurğulayır.
- Mübaliğəsizlik (understatement): vəziyyəti olduğundan yüngül göstərmək. It's a bit chilly today. (Bu gün bir az sərinlik var.) Əslində -20°C ola bilər.
Mübaliğəsizliyin əsas ifadələri
| İfadə | Mənası | Nümunə |
|---|---|---|
| a bit | bir az, olduqca | I'm a bit tired. (çox yorğunam) |
| not bad | pis deyil, əslində çox yaxşı | Not bad at all! (çox yaxşı!) |
| I wouldn't say no | razıyam, istəyirəm | I wouldn't say no to a coffee. |
| slightly | bir qədər, çox | That's slightly annoying. (çox əsəbi) |
| could be worse | o qədər də pis deyil | How's the new job? Could be worse. |
Nə vaxt işlədilir?
- Yaxın dostlar arasında: yumşaq zarafat, lağlağı.
- Rəsmi olmayan iş mühitində: gərginliyi azaltmaq üçün.
- Özünə qarşı: öz uğursuzluğunu yüngülləşdirmək üçün. I'm not exactly a morning person. (Mən səhər insanı deyiləm.)
Diqqət!
Sarkazm həmişə yaxşı qarşılanmır. Rəsmi və ya tanımadığın insanlarla sarkazmdan çəkinmək lazımdır. Səs tonu (ton) və üz ifadəsi çox vacibdir: eyni sözlər zarafat və ya təhqir kimi səslənə bilər.
Azərbaycan dili ilə müqayisə
Azərbaycan dilində də ironiya var (“Əla, yenə gecikdin!”), lakin ingilis dilində understatement daha geniş yayılıb və tez-tez həddindən artıq yumşaq ifadələrlə verilir. Məsələn, ingilis “That's a bit of a problem” deyəndə, əslində böyük problem ola bilər. Azərbaycan dilində bu cür yumşaltma daha az rast gəlinir; birbaşa “Bu böyük problemdir” demək adi haldır.
Examples
A: How was the exam? B: Oh, it was a bit tricky.
A: İmtahan necə keçdi? B: Eh, bir az çətin idi.
“a bit tricky” əslində “çox çətin” deməkdir.
Great, the train is late again. Just what I needed.
Əla, qatar yenə gecikir. Lap lazım idi.
ironiya: “great” və “just what I needed” əks məna daşıyır.
I wouldn't say no to a slice of cake.
Bir dilim torta yox demərəm.
mübaliğəsizlik: əslində “çox istəyirəm”.
You're a real genius, aren't you? You've locked the keys inside again.
Sən lap dahisən, elə deyil? Açarları yenə içəridə qoymusan.
sarkazm: tənqid.
It's not the best idea I've ever heard.
Bu, eşitdiyim ən yaxşı fikir deyil.
yumşaq tənqid: “pis fikirdir”.
I'm not exactly thrilled about working this weekend.
Bu həftəsonu işləməyə o qədər də həvəsli deyiləm.
“not exactly thrilled” = heç də sevinmirəm.
Common mistakes
I am agree with you.
I agree with you.
İngilis dilində “agree” feildir, onunla “am” işlədilmir. Azərbaycan dilində “razıyam” deyilir, amma ingilis dilində “I agree” kifayətdir.
It's a bit very cold today.
It's a bit cold today.
“a bit” və “very” birlikdə işlədilmir, çünki hər ikisi dərəcə bildirir. Yalnız birini seçmək lazımdır.
He is making irony.
He is being ironic.
İngilis dilində “irony” isimdir, “ironic” sifətdir. “Ironiya etmək” üçün “be ironic” və ya “use irony” deyilir.
That's slightly terrible.
That's absolutely terrible.
“Slightly” yalnız yumşaq, az dərəcəli sifətlərlə işlədilir (slightly cold, slightly annoying). “Terrible” kimi güclü sözlərlə “absolutely” və ya “completely” uyğundur.
