Writing: simple request emails

Yazı: sadə xahiş məktubları

After this lesson you can

  • Can write a short, polite email asking for information or a favour.
  • Can organise an email with a greeting, reason for writing, request and closing.
  • Can use polite request forms: Could you...?, I would like to..., I was wondering if...

Explanation

Structure of a request email

  1. Subject: short and clear.
  2. Greeting: Dear Mr Rahimov, / Dear Sir or Madam, / Hi Leyla,
  3. Reason: I am writing to ask about...
  4. Request: Could you please send me...? I would like to know...
  5. Thanks: Thank you in advance. I look forward to hearing from you.
  6. Closing: Kind regards, / Best regards, + name.

Avoid I want and imperatives in formal emails; use would like and could.

In indirect questions, use normal word order: Could you tell me when the course starts? (not when does the course start).

Use Dear + title + surname (Mr Huseynov), not first name with Mr/Ms.

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

Xahiş məktubunun quruluşu

  1. Mövzu (Subject): qısa və aydın – Question about English courses
  2. Müraciət: Dear Mr Rəhimov, / Dear Sir or Madam, (adı bilmirsinizsə) / Hi Leyla, (tanış adam)
  3. Məktubun səbəbi: I am writing to ask about... / I'm writing because...
  4. Xahiş(lər): Could you please send me...? / I would like to know...
  5. Təşəkkür və gözlənti: Thank you in advance. I look forward to hearing from you.
  6. Sonluq: Best regards, / Kind regards, + adınız

Nəzakətli xahiş formaları

Daha birbaşaDaha nəzakətli
Can you send...?Could you (please) send...?
I want to know...I would like to know...
Tell me the price.Could you tell me the price?
–I was wondering if you could...

Azərbaycan dilində rəsmi məktubda «Hörmətli...», «Xahiş edirəm...» kimi ifadələr işlənir. İngilis dilində isə want sözü və əmr forması (Send me...) rəsmi məktubda kobud səslənir. Onları would like və could ilə əvəz edin.

Dolayı suallar

Sualı «Could you tell me...?» ilə başlasanız, söz sırası təsdiq cümləsi kimi olur:

  • ✗ Could you tell me when does the course start?
  • ✓ Could you tell me when the course starts?

Rəsmi və qeyri-rəsmi

RəsmiQeyri-rəsmi
Dear Ms Əliyeva,Hi Sara,
I am writing to ask...Just a quick question...
I would be grateful if...Could you do me a favour?
Kind regards,Thanks! / See you soon,

Faydalı məsləhətlər

  • Bir abzasda bir fikir.
  • Hər xahişi ayrıca cümlə ilə yazın.
  • Rəsmi məktubda qısaltmalardan (I'm, can't) az istifadə edin.
  • Dear sözündən sonra yalnız soyad və ya tam ad yazılır: Dear Mr Hüseynov (✗ Dear Mr Elvin).

Examples

  • Subject: Question about evening English classes

Mövzu: Axşam ingilis dili dərsləri ilə bağlı sual

  • Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to ask about your summer courses.

Hörmətli cənab və ya xanım, yay kurslarınız haqqında soruşmaq üçün yazıram.

  • Could you please send me the timetable and prices?

Zəhmət olmasa, mənə dərs cədvəlini və qiymətləri göndərə bilərsiniz?

  • I would like to know if there is a discount for students.

Tələbələr üçün endirim olub-olmadığını bilmək istərdim.

  • Could you tell me when the next course starts?

Növbəti kursun nə vaxt başladığını deyə bilərsiniz?

    Dolayı sualda söz sırası dəyişmir.

Görəsən, CV-mlə bağlı mənə kömək edə bilərsənmi.

  • Thank you in advance. I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, Nicat Abbasov

Əvvəlcədən təşəkkür edirəm. Cavabınızı gözləyirəm. Hörmətlə, Nicat Abbasov

Common mistakes

  • I want you to send me the prices.

Could you please send me the prices?

Rəsmi məktubda want birbaşa və kobud səslənir; could daha nəzakətlidir.

  • Could you tell me how much does it cost?

Could you tell me how much it costs?

Dolayı sualda does işlənmir, söz sırası təsdiq cümləsi kimidir.

  • Dear Mr Elvin,

Dear Mr Məmmədov, / Dear Elvin,

Mr/Ms soyadla işlənir. Adla müraciət edirsinizsə, Mr yazmayın.

  • I look forward to hear from you.

I look forward to hearing from you.

look forward to ifadəsində to ön sözdür, ondan sonra -ing gəlir.

  • Waiting your answer.

I look forward to your reply.

Azərbaycancadakı «Cavabınızı gözləyirəm» ifadəsini sözbəsöz tərcümə etməyin; wait for lazımdır, amma ən təbii ifadə look forward to-dur.
